Cuffs representation Exam Q1
Media Cuffs
Exam Question Q1
Analyse how representation is used in the episode to create
meaning for a mainstream pre watershed audience
One of the characters,
Jake, is represented as white homosexual
male police officer we know this
because in the car Jake says “I’m
gay 22, dad is the superintendent and rookie
police officer” this shows how in society that being gay is accepted especially when he tells this to Ryan and he shows no surprise, shows no difference in the way he treats Jake He challenges the gay stereotype by being a police officer
rather than stereotypically being in the fashion industry this creates meaning
for the audience by showing that we don’t
have to become our
stereotypes and can countertype that by doing anything they
want. and this shows
A good first attempt at an exam question.

When reflecting, please use a green font.
- Highlight the key words in the question (the ones we circled during our lesson)
- Your answer needs a structure and clarity. Use the PEE structure.
Point - One of the characters, Jake, is represented as white homosexual
male police officer
Evidence - we know this because in the car Jake says “I’m

Explanation (this needs much more focus) - HOW is meaning created for the audience? Why is this sexuality accepted in society?
