The uses and gratifications theory assumes audiences actively seek out media to satisfy individual needs
The uses and gratification theory implies that an audience consumes media to fulfil their needs

The uses and gratification theory looks to answer 3 questions
1)What do people do with media
2)what are their underlying motives for using said media
3)

Media is to
·     Inform
·     Personal identity
·     Integration and social interaction (personal relationships)
·     Escapism
·     Education

Founding out about relevant events and conditions in immediate surroundings, society and the world


Seeking advice on practical matters or opinion and decision choices
satisfying curiosity and general interest
learning self-education
gaining a sense of security through knowledge

Personal identity
·     Gaining insight into one’s self
·     Identifying with valued others(in the media)
·     Finding models of behaviour
·     Finding reinforcements for personal values

Entertainment
·     Escapism or being diverted from problems
·     Relaxing
·     Filling time
·     Emotional Release
·     Sexual gratification  

Integration and social interaction
·     Gaining insight into circumstances of others; social empathy
·     Identify with others and gaining a sense of belonging
·     Finding a basis for conversation and social interaction
·     Having a substitute for real-life companionship 

1)The uses and gratifications theory can be applied to family guy through entertainment by using escapism to shed light on family problems such as alcoholism or the death of a pet

2)the uses and gratification theory can be applied to capital radio through entertainment using relaxation by relaxing you with talking or music
3)the uses and gratification theory can be applied to Facebook through integration and social interactions by identifying with others
4)the uses and gratification theory can be applied to call of duty ghosts through Entertainment by emotional release

Media contexts can influence television programs such as cuffs with events such as gay marriage being legalised in the 2010s affected Jake being openly gay and having no issues this has become a popular idea in society but also in 2010s culture was also influenced by the rise in hate crimes this context may influence media products because it is something that people are going to watch because it is relevant to today this can be reflected in the way Jake is portrayed in cuffs has changed massively as in the 60s it was considered that you were ill if you were homosexual and would be hidden from he public view especially through media products .
